Makeup artist from Lurgan faces challenges of fame

Some people dream of becoming a hit on the big screen. Others, however, want it on a computer screen.

Becoming an online celebrity is a dream for many industries today. From gamers to fashion ambassadors, personal trainers to makeup artists, the public is sharing their passions through social media and YouTube.

Nadine Campbell from Armagh is exactly where you need to be. The 23-year-old found her dream job as a makeup artist in Belfast and now has a thriving career online. YouTubers she once considered an inspiration caught her attention.

However, she realised that creating and uploading content isn’t as easy as it sounds if you want to succeed. “A lot of people now see how well the industry is doing and naturally want to jump on the bandwagon because they think it’s an easy way to make money, but this couldn’t be further from the truth and unfortunately it doesn’t work,” she explains from Lurgan.

“You absolutely have to be creative and use your imagination to stand out. When audiences see the same thing over and over again, they get bored. I know for myself that only well-made, creative things can capture my attention.

“Recently makeup artist Keilidh Cashell followed me on Instagram and told me I was amazing. If that’s not a makeup artist’s dream, I don’t know what is! She’s definitely a huge inspiration when it comes to my creative makeup.”

Although Nadine had long been ambitious about pursuing a career in the field – she started watching YouTubers over a decade ago and taught herself everything she knows today – it wasn’t until she studied International Hotel Management that she felt she needed to push herself in that direction.

“I didn’t really start experimenting until my fourth year at university. “I think it kept me sane while studying a course that I had absolutely no interest in,” she continues.

“When I decided to start making YouTube videos, I knew I needed good equipment to get started, especially because the beauty industry is so competitive right now. I wanted to make a pretty good first impression, so I bought a camera, a tripod and a ring light and started making videos from there.”

Not content to rest on her laurels, this talented artist has big ambitions for the future. “I definitely want to be an influencer. I’d love to be a role model for a lot of people and a good example to everyone who wants to follow in my footsteps. But I know you don’t become an influencer overnight.”

As she continues to gain recognition from big names in the industry, her six-year-old niece has become her biggest fan: “I often hear her come into the house with a few of her friends and she brags to them, “This is my Auntie Nadine’s house. She’s famous and she’s on YouTube, you know?”

With so much talent, it’s no surprise to see this Lurgan woman continue to rise in the industry and become a force in the YouTube and social media space of the cosmetics industry.
